Why are some conditions get viruses and bacteria to thrive, while other conditions are better at killing it? The Coronavirus survives for days on plastic, glass, or metal but disintegrates within minutes when in contact with copper surfaces.
Researchers investigate the antimicrobial properties of copper and the process performed to destroy a wide range of viruses and bacteria that threaten public health.
Long before the concept of viruses and bacteria became understood, ancient civilizations have realized the copper’s disinfectant properties and used it for their health benefits.
For example, in India, it was observed that the water contained in copper vessels was of better quality than water in other materials. The Chinese used copper coins as medication to treat heart and stomach pain, while Egyptians used copper’s infection-killing power and denoted copper in hieroglyphs as the ankh symbol.
Leveraging the power of copper, Scientists today have scientifically formulized the unique virtues of cooper to medical instruments to fight Viruses, Bacteria, and different infections. Keevil, a microbiology researcher at the University of Southampton (U.K.), has studied the antimicrobial properties of copper for more than two decades. He and his team tested viruses like Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and the Swine Flu (H1N1) and the Coronavirus 229E, in each case, copper killed viruses in only a few minutes.
According to Edward Bilsky, Ph.D., Provost and Chief Academic Officer at Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences presented that copper can kill the pathogen in a few ways:
– When a microorganism comes into contact with copper, the copper destroys the membranes of bacterial cells and can destroy the DNA and RNA of the germs, preventing the mutations.
– It generates oxidative stress on bacterial cells and creates hydrogen peroxide that can kill the cell.
– It destroys bacterial cells by blocking the function of the protein and inhibiting their activity.
A recent scientific study published in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that there were no viable SARS-CoV-2 after 4 hours on copper’s surface, and the virus was no longer infectious. (posted March 17, 2020, at NEJM.org.)
How can we apply the antimicrobial properties of copper for our everyday medical purposes, and especially for preventing Pandemics just like the Covid-19?
Scientists, worldwide, in the fields of biochemistry & chemistry, investigated how impregnation of copper oxide into a facemask provides it with powerful biocidal effects on infectious diseases, in addition to their native filtration properties. Such studies included comprehensive research on the unique properties of copper and its medical features.
Successfully enough, the outcome of those researches proved that copper oxide impregnated non-woven are effective in eliminating viruses and bacteria and by doing so enable risk reduction of infections. This scientific breakthrough led to a revolutionary product in the PPE arena.
With over 30 registered patents, presenting how Copper oxide displays potent antiviral properties, an Israeli technology company leveraged it, and used the antimicrobial properties of copper in a proprietary manufacturing process and presented a world’s revolutionary Viral Deactivator Non-Woven Technology.
As of today, the patented technology provides enhanced protection of different virus by using copper oxide layers in a Non-Woven multi-layer Facemask . The ” virus elimination” mechanism is achieved by the interaction of copper ions with the virions that are entrapped in the mask or that come into contact with the surface of the copper oxide impregnated outer surfaces of the masks.
In addition to the mask’s Antiviral assets, the company has made the next step to enhance the mask performance and adjusted it to meet the highest facemask filtering standards, i.e., Type IIR . Hence, the new IIR Copper Oxide-based facemask provides a strong level of protection against respiratory viral and bacterial pathogens.
Development of a biocidal mask (and in general, all personal protective equipment) capable of rendering the pathogens that come into contact with them non-infectious, may significantly reduce pathogen transmission and contamination of the wearers themselves and the environment. This is even more relevant today when countries and administrations are dealing with the Coronavirus pandemic, which dramatically affects both the health system and the local and global markets.
The Copper oxide anti-bacterial facemask possesses numerous benefits. Thanks to mask ability to destroy and eliminate the virus on touch, it became a multiuse non-woven facemask. The mere fact that the mask is Multiuse, i.e., can be worn and provide effective protection against self-infection and infecting others, multiple times, makes the mask a sustainable one, hence reducing the need for numerous regular facemask, therefore minimizing its environmental impacts, reducing waste and maximizing resource efficiency.
Today, it is already clear to epidemiology experts that the Copper Oxide Israeli patented technology has a strong impact on preventing the next wave of pandemic.
